Trust us...

This is the sister restaurant to the one in LA (which I have also reviewed). The Chef in Hawaii is the student of the restaurant in LA, but I have to say that I prefer his food more. Obviously, this is really subjective since both are so far better than anything else I've had.

It's hard to pinpoint one thing that really sets Sasabune apart, since there are so many, but if I was forced to pick one it would be the Toro. Where a normal high-end sushi restaurant might have Toro occasionally, Sasabune had two types of Toro during my visit. Moreover, they were much better than any Toro I have ever experienced (which includes sushi restaurants on both coasts and Tokyo).

Since the fish is flown in daily, it is hard to say what they will be serving. That said, here are my favorite items during my trip to Honolulu in 2005:

  1. Toro
  2. Toro
  3. Tuna & Albacore appetizer
  4. Albacore
  5. Tamago
  6. Salmon
Honolulu Restaurants - Ala Moana
Jackie's Kitchen
Ala Moana Shopping Center
Honolulu, HI

(808) 943-CHAN
Jackie's Kitchen is a restaurant owned by Jackie Chan. While he's a great actor (and you can't begin to comment unless you've seen Drunken Master 2), his restaurant leaves me wanting for more. There are better Chinese restaurants in the food court on the first level (particularly the one which serves Dim Sum for lunch).

I'd only suggest you venture over to Jackie's if you are a die-hard fan and don't care that there is better food to be had elsewhere. My sister-in-law Gail certainly falls into this category, but even she agrees that the food is just ok.
